Drive-in cinema returns for Italy's Phase 2
As Italy's lockdown eases, drive-in cinemas are emerging as a cultural solution for Phase 2. While traditional theaters remain closed, organizers like Giovanni Calvario in Rome are launching drive-in experiences starting June 2 in the EUR district. Calvario, who previously tested this format successfully at Ex Dogana in 2015, plans a pop-oriented program featuring cult films, sagas, and new releases across three daily time slots, including family-friendly screenings. Ticket prices average €10, with premium front-row seats and a food-and-beverage area. Capacity is capped at 150 cars. Calvario also envisions live theater and music events, potentially adding a stage alongside the maxi screen. The drive-in trend is already established in Germany, Denmark, and the US, where concerts are also adopting the format for summer 2020. The first Italian drive-in opened on August 29, 1957, between Axa and Casal Palocco near Rome, screening Dino Risi's 'La nonna Sabella.' Internationally, popular drive-in titles include 'Grease,' 'Gladiator,' 'Star Wars,' 'La La Land,' 'Rocketman,' and Quentin Tarantino's films. US drive-ins currently feature 'Trolls World Tour,' 'Bad Boys for Life,' 'Us,' and 'Jumanji: The Next Level.' The Venice Film Festival's status remains uncertain, while Cannes 2020 was canceled.
