DRIFT's Shy Society Hovers Over Venice's Grand Canal

Dutch studio DRIFT has unveiled 'Shy Society,' a kinetic light installation suspended from the facade of Palazzo Balbi above the Grand Canal during the Venice Biennale 2026. Visible from the Accademia Bridge and passing boats, the work consists of robotic textile elements made of aluminum, polished stainless steel, silk, LEDs, and custom technologies. Each sculpture mimics the nyctinasty of flowers, opening and closing in response to environmental conditions. Developed over five years, the silk structures follow a choreography modeled after a human resting heartbeat. The installation is on view until May 10, 2026. DRIFT founders Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta describe the work as exploring softness, light, and movement to create connection. The Shylight series is held in collections including the Rijksmuseum and Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt. DRIFT will open an 8,000-square-meter museum in Amsterdam later this year, and in 2027 marks twenty years of practice.
