Dream of the Day: Phantasmagoric Group Show in Kuala Lumpur
Curated by Patrick Flores, the exhibition Dream of the Day at Ilham Gallery in Kuala Lumpur showcases the works of 39 artists from Southeast Asia and beyond, delving into themes of dreams, monsters, myths, and fantasies within the context of colonialism and global media influence. Opening with Al Manrique's 1983 socialist-realist piece Salubong Sa Bagong Umaga and David Medalla's 1965 textual manifesto mmmmmmm… Manifesto, the exhibition is arranged by thematic attitude rather than chronology, featuring eight sections that merge historical and contemporary art. Highlights include Van Leo's striking self-portraits, Ivan Sagita's 1989 surreal work The Essence of Cow in the Macro and the Microcosmosis, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul's 2005 film Worldly Desires. The exhibition is on view until 14 May.
