DR Congo Ebola outbreak nears record with 3,262 cases

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now confirmed 3,262 cases, nearing the 2018-2020 outbreak's record of over 3,400 cases. According to the Congolese health ministry, there have been 1,437 fatalities among the confirmed cases. Officials have labeled this as the quickest Ebola outbreak documented, primarily affecting the eastern Ituri province. The previous outbreak, which also impacted Uganda, persisted for about two years, resulting in over 3,400 cases and over 2,200 deaths, as reported by the US Centers for Disease Control. The rapid spread of the current outbreak has raised alarms, particularly as many affected communities remain inaccessible or have been deserted by responders due to threats from local residents and rebel groups.
