DP6 Architects creates painter's studio in Delft garden

Dutch architecture firm DP6 has completed a painter's studio and house refurbishment in Delft, Netherlands. The project, located in the city center, involves restoring a traditional canalside row house and adding a single-storey studio in the rear garden. The studio, built from Douglas fir timber, features exposed interior structure, a canopy over the exterior terrace, and a strip of roof lights for northern light. The garden includes new patios, an oval pool, and natural planting that preserves existing mature trees. The ground floor of the house was reshaped with an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space and a new glazed rear façade, creating a dialogue between the house and studio. Oak was used extensively for new elements like the kitchen, fireplace, staircase, and wardrobes. The front façade retains its traditional appearance as the house is listed for historic interest. DP6, based in Delft, has worked on projects ranging from university campuses to private residences like Villa Santpoort.
