DP6 and i29 Transform Utrecht School into Judicial Training Institute
In Utrecht, Netherlands, the historic 1903 school building has been transformed into a training center for the Dutch Judiciary and Public Prosecution Service by architecture firms i29 and DP6. The Central Government Real Estate Agency commissioned this renovation of the four-storey Courthouse Building H, which had previously been repurposed as offices for the Utrecht Courthouse in 1995. The renovation preserved key elements such as the U-shaped floorplan, terrazzo flooring, arched openings, and a timber staircase adorned with black metal railings. A new sculptural white folded steel staircase provides a modern contrast. Educational spaces on the ground and first floors feature muted color palettes, while open study areas on the upper levels include new dark-steel framed windows. Original globe lights were reused in the corridors, and sustainability improvements prioritized a fabric-first approach to restore the building's original qualities, including symmetry and craftsmanship.
