Doutdo Biennale 2023: Fragility as Theme, Joan Crous Work at Artefiera
The doutdo biennale, whose name was coined by actor Alessandro Bergonzoni and alludes to 'giving for giving' without expecting anything in return, returns in 2023 with the theme of fragility. Promoted by the Associazione Amici della Fondazione Hospice under Alessandra D’Innocenzo, the initiative raises funds for Fondazione Hospice Seràgnoli Onlus, which provides care for incurable patients and their families, and supports palliative medicine research at Campus Bentivoglio. Since 2011, doutdo has involved artists, galleries, institutions, businesses, and collectors in donating works to the cause, emphasizing gift over possession. Works are also visible on the Google Cultural Institute's Arts & Culture portal. At Artefiera (February 3–5, Bologna), doutdo previews the 2023 edition with Fràgil, a large glass sculpture by Catalan-born, Bologna-based artist Joan Crous, comprising six unique fused-glass pieces with manual interventions. The installation, designed by Michele de Lucchi with Alberto Nason, presents the works on a long glass table with two Bernina benches in Lecce stone, evoking Giovanni Gastel's 2019 photograph La cena di Atene. After the fair, Fràgil enters the doutdo collection and will be assigned to collectors or museums via donation. A catalogue includes critical texts by Domenico De Masi, Gianluca Riccio, Sebastiano Maffettone, Pierpaolo Forte, and contributions by Michele de Lucchi, Roberto Grandi, and Alessandro Bergonzoni.
