Doug Aitken's Lightscape Opens at The Shed, Blending Film, Sound, and Live Performance

Lightscape, a new installation by Doug Aitken, has debuted at The Shed in New York. This work features a seven-screen film, creating an immersive space that serves as a venue for live performances, centered around music. It portrays characters traversing deserts, highways, and various landscapes, all interconnected through sound. Aitken designed Lightscape around an original song cycle, integrating pieces by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Meredith Monk, with performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The launch included a live show by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, while future performances will feature artists like William Basinski, Suzanne Ciani, and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Aitken's ongoing exploration of music is evident in previous projects such as Diamond Sea, SONG 1, and Station to Station, blurring the lines between film, sculpture, performance, and sound.
