Double Solo Show Opens in Puglia's Smallest Contemporary Art Gallery

A double solo exhibition titled 'Fatuaria' has opened at the Sagrestia di Fatuaria, a four-square-meter white lamia in Ostuni, Italy, now the smallest contemporary art gallery in Puglia. Curated by Isabella Battista, the show features works by Iginio Iurilli (born 1943 in Gioia del Colle) and Vincenzo De Sario (born 1965 in Bari). The gallery space, historically used by a country priest, is attached to a small church dedicated to the protectors of trulli, Santi Cosima and Damiano, on the grounds of the Masseria Fatuaria in the Valle d'Itria. Iurilli's terracotta sculptures celebrate Mediterranean flora and fauna with vibrant polychromy, including a black sea urchin, a pink shell, an olive leaf, and an exploding tomato jar. De Sario creates sculptures from iron, steel, aluminum, and other construction materials, such as a giant aluminum nail, a small cube of steel chains, and a 'hammer brush' reminiscent of Gerald Scarfe's illustrations for Pink Floyd's 'The Wall.' The works generate optical effects that shift with the viewer's perspective.
