dotdotdot: Milanese Studio Merges Art, Tech, and Design

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Founded in 2004 in Milan, dotdotdot is a multidisciplinary design studio that fuses art, architecture, installation, and design with new technologies and media. The studio operates as a conceptual and physical Italian outpost of the global Fablab movement, post-Massimo Banzi and Arduino, with a distinctly Italian approach. Inside their loft, 3D printers, industrial embroidery machines, electronic circuits, chips, laser cutters, and welding machines coexist with a team of philosophers, architects, designers, engineers, computer scientists, and graphic artists who collaborate on equal footing, breaking down disciplinary boundaries. Architect Italo Rota, described as the "grand master of ceremonies," guides the studio's exploration of the extreme present—a boundary where digital and technological experimentation transcends functional and aesthetic limits. Among dotdotdot's numerous projects is Opendot, a makerspace and hub for experimentation, innovation, and research. Another project, Makerland, is a prototyping shop inside an Auchan hypermarket in Monza (2015), using digital fabrication to create toys and tools for children with disabilities, supporting rehabilitation. The studio's work embodies a relentless investigation of the digital and technological, pushing beyond conventional boundaries.
