Dorothée Munyaneza's 'Unwanted' Addresses Wartime Sexual Violence

artist · 2026-05-05

On November 11 and 12, Dorothée Munyaneza, a British artist originally from Rwanda, will showcase her performance titled 'Unwanted' at Teatro India during the Romaeuropa Festival in Rome. This piece confronts the issue of sexual violence against women in conflict zones, drawing from interviews with survivors of the 1994 Tutsi genocide in Rwanda. Munyaneza collaborates with Godeliève Mukasarasi and SEVOTA to document testimonies in Kinyarwanda, which she then translates for her performance. The work incorporates dance, text, song, and features music by Holland Andrews and Henryk Gorecki. Additionally, a discussion with Zero Impunity, organized by Internazionale, will accompany the performance. 'Unwanted' will also be presented at the Festival d'Automne in Paris on November 24, highlighting the significance of sharing women's narratives.
