Dorothea Rockburne's Scalar featured in Brooklyn Museum survey and Craig F. Starr solo show

Dorothea Rockburne's 1971 work Scalar, owned by the Museum of Modern Art, stands out in the Brooklyn Museum's exhibition Materializing 'Six Years': Lucy R. Lippard and the Emergence of Conceptual Art, on view through February 3, 2013 at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. Amid conceptual art's dematerialized tendencies, Scalar employs chipboard soaked in crude oil, blending mathematical rigor with organic staining effects. A concurrent exhibition at Craig F. Starr Gallery, Dorothea Rockburne: Works 1967-1972, located at 5 East 73rd Street between Fifth and Madison avenues, closes October 20 and includes studies for Scalar alongside vintage fold drawings. In the gallery's catalogue, David Levi Strauss likens the work's patterns to Chinese landscape paintings. Rockburne will participate in a conversation at the Bard Graduate Center on October 25 at 6 PM at 18 West 86th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, supporting an exhibition of Benoit Mandelbrot drawings. The artist's piece remains relevant post-9/11 despite restrictions on crude oil procurement.
