Dorothea Lange Exhibition Opens at Bassano del Grappa's Museo Civico

The Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa, in collaboration with Camera Torino, presents 'Dorothea Lange. L'Altra America', running until February 4, 2024. The exhibition features 200 photographs by Dorothea Lange (1895–1965), the first female photographer to receive a MoMA retrospective. Her empathetic portraiture, using waist-level viewfinders, documented the Great Depression, migrations, Japanese-American internment after Pearl Harbor, and climate change. A highlight is 'Migrant Mother', shot at a Nipomo, California camp in 1936. The museum offers a tactile path for blind and visually impaired visitors. The venue, housed in a former Franciscan convent since 1828, is one of Veneto's oldest museum sites. It also holds the largest collection of Jacopo Bassano's paintings and a permanent Canova wing. The exhibition is part of a broader tourist itinerary in Bassano del Grappa, a town known for Palladio's wooden Ponte Vecchio (Ponte degli Alpini), rebuilt after 1945 bombings. Other attractions include the Museo Hemingway e della Grande Guerra at Ca' Erizzo, the Brion Memorial by Carlo Scarpa (donated to FAI in 2022), the Tipoteca di Cornuda, and the Prosecco hills of Valdobbiadene. The town also hosts the first Italian Chess Museum, opened spring 2023 in Marostica's Castello Inferiore, housing Giovanni Longo's private collection.
