Dordrechts Museum Reveals Artistic Process in 'De kunstenaar aan het werk'

The Dordrechts Museum in Dordrecht, Netherlands, is presenting the exhibition 'De kunstenaar aan het werk – van schets tot schilderij' (The Artist at Work – from Sketch to Painting), which offers visitors a glimpse into the creative processes of both renowned and lesser-known artists. Featuring nearly seventy works drawn from the museum's permanent collection and loans, the show highlights the choices, doubts, successes, and failures inherent in creating art. A standout feature is a wall of oil sketches, displaying serene landscapes, self-portraits, and rare views of artists' studios. The exhibition brings artists closer by examining not only their finished works but also the exploratory journey behind them. Some pieces create the sensation of looking over the artist's shoulder, such as the studio of Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (1821–1909), complete with paint-splattered easels and paintings of kittens, alongside original objects like an old paint box and a maulstick. Works like Willem Bastiaan Tholen's 'Zelfportret in bosrijk landschap' (1895) and David Oyens' 'De teekening' (1879) are particularly striking for their direct gazes, making viewers feel as if they are witnessing the artists at work.
