Donna Dennis's immersive installation Ship and Dock/Nights and Days or The Gazer at Lesley Heller Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From May 31 to June 30, 2018, the Lesley Heller Gallery in New York City presented an exhibition by Donna Dennis titled Ship and Dock/Nights and Days or The Gazer. This engaging installation included a dock featuring two weathered corrugated metal sheds and a bulb reminiscent of a Bec Auer gas lamp. Upon entering through a black curtain, guests found themselves in a dimly lit area with a bench oriented towards a wall adorned with small lights, mimicking a star-filled sky. The experience was enhanced by ambient sounds and a projection that transitioned from day to night. The work drew inspiration from industrial maritime architecture and was likened to the creations of Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp. It was later reconstructed at 54 Orchard Street following its initial assembly in the artist's studio.
