Donato Piccolo's 'Reality Reversible' at Shanghai's Alluneednow

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Italian artist Donato Piccolo (b. 1976) presents 'Reality Reversible' at Alluneednow, a multifunctional space run by the SMart curatorial group (Sandra Yin and Martha Zhang) in Shanghai. The exhibition, on view until November 30, features sculptures that engage with natural phenomena like hurricanes, vortices, and electrical states, creating reversible movements and transformations. Piccolo created the works during a three-month residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, the oldest hotel in Asia, invited by the Hajek couple (owners of Swatch) through the Swatch Foundation. During his stay, he met figures such as Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jeffrey Deitch, Anish Kapoor, and Italians Massimo Torrigiani and Davide Quadrio. The artist explains that while human actions are irreversible, his sculptures play with physical and visual reversibility, returning to their original state when the mechanism stops.
