Donatello in Tuscany: A guide to the Renaissance sculptor's works across the region
A new volume edited by Francesco Caglioti, curator of the landmark Donatello exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, traces all of the Renaissance master's works preserved in various Tuscan locations. The exhibition, open until July 31, is complemented by this publication that functions like a treasure hunt. Starting in Florence, where the highest concentration of Donatello's sculptures is found, the itinerary includes Empoli, Prato, Pisa, Siena, and Arezzo. In Florence, key works include the marble David at the Bargello, the Cantoria, and sculptures at Orsanmichele, Museo Bardini, and churches such as Santa Croce and San Lorenzo. In Pontorme (Empoli), a polychrome terracotta Madonna and Child in the church of San Martino has recently been attributed to Donatello. In Prato, the circular pulpit on the cathedral's facade, a collaboration with Michelozzo, features original reliefs now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. Pisa's Museo Nazionale di San Matteo houses the gilded bronze reliquary bust of San Rossore. Siena's baptistery font includes Donatello's gilded bronze panel of the Feast of Herod and statuettes of Faith and Hope. Arezzo's cathedral holds a relief of the Baptism of Christ, now attributed to Donatello. In Torrita di Siena, the church of Sante Flora e Lucilla contains a lunette with the Blood of the Redeemer, with a copy made in the 1920s. The volume is published by Marsilio Editori, Venice, 2022, 160 pages, €18.
