cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

After a €6 million restoration, the Domus of Tito Macro, a significant Roman-era dwelling in Aquileia, has reopened. This project, funded by the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and ALES S.p.A., was promoted by Fondazione Aquileia, under the leadership of Ambassador Antonio Zanardi Landi. Dating back to the 1st century BCE and spanning 1,700 square meters, the site was excavated by Prof. Jacopo Bonetto from the University of Padua between the 1950s and 2015. The owner, Tito Macro, was recognized through an inscribed stone weight. Among the remarkable discoveries are a gold ring and more than 1,200 gold coins. The restoration work included a new roof and the conservation of 320 square meters of mosaics, contributing to the attraction of 60,000 visitors each year.
