Domodossola: art and culture in an unexpected Italian town

Domodossola, a town in the Verbano province at the foot of the Ossola Valley, has revitalized its medieval core as the 'Borgo della Cultura' through architectural restoration. The third edition of the Di-Se illustration festival runs until early July at Collegio Mellerio Rosmini and across the city. Key attractions include the Civic Museums at Palazzo San Francesco (reopened in 2021 after restoration, housing natural science, painting, archaeology, and sacred art collections), the Poscio Collection at Casa de Rodis (19th- and early-20th-century paintings by Carlo Fornara, Enrico Cavalli, and others, plus a temporary Giuliano Crivelli retrospective), the Resistance Museum in Villadossola (founded 1983, documenting the 1944 Ossola Republic), and the Sacro Monte Calvario (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003, founded in the mid-17th century, featuring Antonio Rosmini's cell and a botanical garden). The historic hamlet of Canova in Crevoladossola showcases traditional stone architecture. The Vigezzina-Centovalli railway (first journey 1923) offers scenic rides to Locarno, and the Green Alpine Train runs to Berna.
