Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster's Dystopian Ecology at Tate Modern Turbine Hall

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster's installation TH 2058 opened at the Tate Modern Turbine Hall on October 14, 2008, running until April 13, 2009. The work presents a dystopian vision set fifty years in the future, where constant rain in London has caused public sculptures to grow like tropical plants. The museum becomes a refuge, filled with beds for displaced people. The installation features enlarged replicas of iconic sculptures, including Calder's Flamingo, Bourgeois's Maman, Moore's rocks, Cattelan's dinosaur skeleton, Nauman's suspended animals, and Oldenburg and van Bruggen's Apple Core, all scaled up 25% by Pinewood Studios. A film loop shows excerpts from Resnais's Le Chant du Styrène, Solaris, Spiral Jetty, and other works. The piece reflects on collective memory crisis and shared space, as described by the artist. Gonzalez-Foerster also contributed to the film project Histoires sur les droits de l'homme for the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
