Domingo Milella's nocturnal photo exhibition at Palazzo Erizzo Ligabue, Venice

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Domingo Milella (Bari, 1981) presents 'FUTUROREMOTO' at Palazzo Erizzo Ligabue, the prestigious Venetian seat of the Fondazione Giancarlo Ligabue on the Grand Canal. The exhibition features ten photographs taken since 2016, exploring what Milella calls the 'golden reserve of the Homo Sapiens imaginary'—prehistoric cave paintings and engravings in southern European mountains. The show begins with an external view of El Castillo mountain in Spain, which holds the oldest known pigment, dating back at least 64,000 years. Milella, a student of Thomas Struth, captures forms and colors (sometimes in negative) from painted walls. He asserts that 'in prehistory there are all forms of modern art,' including abstraction. The installation transforms the noble floor's walls into bare, rock-like surfaces. The exhibition is free by reservation, open 7:30–9:00 PM, with darkness and custom lighting to enhance the experiential quality. A sound accompaniment reworks sounds from bone horns through a synthesizer, blending antiquity and contemporaneity.
