Domenico Gnoli Survey at Lévy Gorvy Dayan, New York
Lévy Gorvy Dayan in New York presents "The Adventure of Domenico Gnoli," a survey of the Italian painter (1933–1970) featuring paintings, drawings, etchings, notebooks, and letters. The exhibition continues Gnoli's legacy in America after his 2021–22 retrospective at Fondazione Prada, Milan. It is organized with Gnoli's widow Yannick Vu, the artist's estate, Mimì Gnoli, and the Livia Polidoro-Gnoli Archive, with works from major private collections. Gnoli, born in Rome, began as an illustrator and set/costume designer before developing his mature style in 1964. His late paintings depict everyday objects—clothing, hair, beds, sofas—enlarged, fragmented, and suspended, creating absorbing and uncanny canvases. He incorporated sand into pigments for a materiality recalling Italian Renaissance frescoes. Gnoli described his approach as metaphysical in its stillness but not in fabrication, isolating and representing simple elements. The exhibition runs until May 23, 2026.
