Domenico Gnoli retrospective at Fondazione Prada in Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Fondazione Prada in Milan presents a comprehensive retrospective of Domenico Gnoli (Rome, 1933 – New York, 1970), featuring around one hundred works and documents. The exhibition, designed by 2×4 New York, is the last conceived by Germano Celant, who passed away in 2020. Gnoli, son of art historians, developed a distinctive sandy painting style that magnifies everyday objects like buttons, shirts, shoes, and pillows. His work has been written about by Italo Calvino. The show includes paintings on the ground floor of the Podium and graphic works, documents, and objects on the first floor, arranged chronologically to trace his evolution. It also highlights his activity as a set designer, poster artist, and illustrator, including a fantastic bestiary. The exhibition draws from numerous international collections and offers a rare opportunity to engage with an artist who was already internationally recognized during his lifetime. Gnoli's art suspends time and space in an otherworldly dimension, blending fantasy, vision, and narrative with technical perfection.
