Doisneau et la musique: Paris exhibition explores photographer's musical passion
The exhibition 'Doisneau et la musique' at the Cité de la musique – Philharmonie de Paris presents over two hundred photographs by Robert Doisneau, revealing his deep passion for music. Doisneau, who famously said his ideal photography school would include a professor of bouquet and one of music, spent years wandering the suburbs of Paris with a Rolleiflex, capturing not only musicians but also the rhythm and joy of people dancing in the streets. Between 1949 and 1951, while working for Vogue, he photographed all the song stars of the time. His musical passion extended to friendships with Jacques Prévert, with whom he created a series, and cellist Maurice Baquet, his 'teacher of happiness'. These friendships led him in the 1960s to photograph Pierre Boulez, Pierre Schaeffer, Henri Dutilleux, André Jolivet, and Maria Callas in their studios. In the 1980s and 1990s, he encountered Jacques Higelin, Renaud, and Les Rita Mitsouko, and also made a short film, 'Les Visiteurs du square', with a soundtrack by composer Nicolas Frize. The exhibition runs until April 28, 2019.
