Documentary 'The Weight of It: Hermanx Reimagined' Follows Mark Grattan's Marble Table Journey
In April, 'The Weight of It: Hermanx Reimagined,' a new documentary, debuted at Village East by Angelika, focusing on furniture designer Mark Grattan's metamorphosis of his renowned Hermanx Table into marble. The film, produced by ABC Stone and filmed by Julie Florio and Mica Spicka, showcases Grattan's artistic vulnerability and the difficulties of reinterpreting a celebrated piece. Grattan, the winner of 'Ellen's Next Great Designer' in 2021, chose Fantastico Danby marble from ABC Stone's Vermont quarries for the 450-pound table. His creative journey, inspired by antique dowel tables from Mexico City's La Lagunilla market, is documented alongside his past eight years running Vidivixi in Mexico City. Now based in Brooklyn, Grattan's work is featured in the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian. Creative director Lyndsey Belle Tyler emphasized that the film focuses on Grattan's artistic journey rather than merely the table. This summer, Grattan plans to unveil a furniture showroom called 'Lived In' in his Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone.
