publication · 2026-04-26

A new documentary, 'L'Impero della Natura. Una Notte al Parco del Colosseo', reveals the hidden ecosystem that emerges at night within Rome's Colosseum archaeological park. Directed by Luca Lancise and Marco Gentili, produced by Sky Italia and Brandon Box, the film captures species such as toads, imperial crabs, hermit rabbits, and hornets that inhabit the ancient ruins. It premiered at the Rome Film Festival, winning the ENIT 'Viaggio in Italia' award. The documentary was made in collaboration with the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, an institute of the Italian Ministry of Culture. Director Alfonsina Russo emphasized the link between history and nature. The film also notes that the only human inhabitants of the Palatine Hill are nuns and friars living in ancient convents. It will be available from March 24 on Sky Nature and streaming on NOW.
