Documentary 'Proserpina e le altre' Examines Gender Violence in Art History

A new documentary titled 'Proserpina e le altre – La violenza di genere nell'arte occidentale' investigates how gender-based violence depicted in Western art is perceived by museum visitors. Written by Mariangela Barbanente with collaboration from Consuelo Lollobrigida and co-directed by Barbanente and Francesco Masi, the film features an international team of experts offering personal interpretations to help recognize violence in all its forms. It contrasts classical myths like the rape of Proserpina with works by female artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, Marina Abramović, and Ana Mendieta, who portrayed violated female bodies with painful participation and denunciation. The documentary is produced by GA&A Productions under the patronage of Fondazione Marisa Bellisario. It will air on La7 on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11:30 PM, in observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and will also be available for free online viewing.
