Documentary 'Palazzo Luce' Reveals a Medieval Palace Turned Contemporary Art Haven in Lecce
A new documentary by Alessandra Galletta explores Palazzo Luce, a medieval building in Lecce's historic center that has been transformed into a unique art gallery, collection, and livable home. Originally called Palazzo dei Conti and once home to Maria D’Enghien, who became Queen of Naples, the palace was discovered by collector Anna Maria Enselmi, who was captivated by its extraordinary light—hence the name 'Luce' (light). The film traces the renovation project and the assembly of a rich contemporary art collection with site-specific works by international artists and designers. Enselmi describes the project as her 'testament,' reflecting her passion for aesthetics, art, and design. The documentary features testimonies from design experts Rossella Colombari and Nina Yashar, architect Giuliano Andrea dell’Uva (who led the renovation), artists bridging art and design such as Martino Gamper and Antonio Marras, and gallerist Lia Rumma, who advised on artwork placement. Artists David Tremlett, Joseph Kosuth, Marzia Migliora, and Giuliano Dal Molin created site-specific interventions, while younger artists Gian Maria Tosatti and Michele Guido also contribute. The film premiered on November 23, 2022, at Anteo Palazzo del Cinema in Milan as part of the Milano Design Film Festival.
