Documentary on Pippa Bacca's Tragic Performance Art Journey Premieres
The documentary 'Sono innamorato di Pippa Bacca' (I Am in Love with Pippa Bacca), directed by Simone Manetti, brings to screen the final performance of Italian artist Pippa Bacca. On March 8, 2008, Bacca and fellow artist Silvia Moro embarked on a hitchhiking journey from Milan to Jerusalem, dressed as brides to promote peace and trust in humanity. The trip was interrupted after 23 days when Bacca was raped and murdered near Istanbul, Turkey. The film incorporates footage shot by Bacca herself and interviews with her family, highlighting her artistic vision and the powerful meaning behind the performance. Bacca, who died at age 33, had meticulously planned the journey for two years, including wedding dresses by Byblos symbolizing purity and fertility, and high-heeled shoes to represent sacrifice. The route passed through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Turkey, where she washed the feet of artists and midwives using her 11-layer veil. The documentary premiered at the Torino Film Festival, offering an intimate portrait of an artist who made hitchhiking her artistic manifesto. Poet Alda Merini dedicated a poem to Bacca.
