Documentary on Leonardo's Sant'Anna Restoration Released Online
A one-hour documentary titled 'Leonardo da Vinci. The Restoration of the Century' is now available online, detailing the restoration of Leonardo da Vinci's painting 'Sant'Anna, la Vergine e il bambino con l'agnellino' (The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne). The masterpiece, created between 1501 and 1513, is housed at the Louvre in Paris. The delicate restoration was carried out by Italian restorer Cinzia Pasquali, based in France, who previously worked on the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre, the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, and paintings in Naples Cathedral, as well as works by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Giuseppe Penone. A committee of leading Leonardo experts supervised the process to avoid over-cleaning. Produced in 2012 by Arte France in collaboration with the Louvre, Nord Ouest Documentaries, and CFRT, the film covers all stages from initial assessments and uncertainties to controversies and the successful conclusion in March 2012 when the painting was returned to its place.
