Documentary on Five David Sculptures in Florence Premieres

publication · 2026-04-27

A new documentary, 'Le sculture di David a Firenze tra Storia e simbolo,' explores five marble and bronze David sculptures in Florence, created by Andrea Pisano, Donatello, Verrocchio, and Michelangelo. The film was conceived by Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze, and Paola d'Agostino, director of the Musei del Bargello, with collaboration from Claudio Rocca, director of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, and support from Florence's culture department and the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore. The documentary highlights the David by Pisano on Giotto's Campanile, two Donatello works at the Bargello (a marble youth and a bronze nude), Verrocchio's bronze, and Michelangelo's iconic marble. It also covers three later copies of Michelangelo's David: Luigi Arrighetti's marble in Piazza della Signoria, Clemente Papi's bronze in Piazzale Michelangelo, and Papi's plaster cast at the Gipsoteca dell'Istituto d'Arte di Porta Romana. The project, initiated during the pandemic, marks the 150th anniversary of Michelangelo's David arriving at the Galleria dell'Accademia on August 8. The documentary premiered on March 30 at the Teatro Nicciolini in Florence.
