Documentary on Eileen Gray's E.1027 villa premieres in Italian cinemas March 12

other · 2026-04-26

A documentary titled 'E.1027 – Eileen Gray e la casa sul mare' directed by Beatrice Minger and Christoph Schaub will be released in Italian cinemas on March 12. The film explores the story of E.1027, a modernist villa designed by Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray with her partner Jean Badovici on the Côte d'Azur. The villa later became the subject of controversy when Le Corbusier, a prominent modernist architect, painted murals on its walls without Gray's consent, and for a time was wrongly credited as the villa's designer. Gray, born in 1878 into a wealthy Irish family, studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and specialized in lacquer work. She created iconic furniture pieces such as the Adjustable Table, Brick Screen, and Bibendum Armchair. Her architectural projects include E.1027 (1924) and Tempe à Pailla. Despite losing sight and hearing, she worked until her death in Paris in 1976 at age 98. Her work was rediscovered shortly before her death. The National Museum of Ireland in Dublin has had a permanent exhibition dedicated to her since 2002. The documentary incorporates original texts, archival footage, and an interview with an elderly Gray. A previous film, 'The Price of Desire' by Mary McGuckian, was released in 2015.
