Documentary on Banksy and C215's Ukrainian street art rescue premieres on Sky Arte
Four years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Sky Arte will air the documentary 'Arte vs Guerra – Banksy e C215 a Borodyanka, Ucraina' on Sunday, April 26. The film recounts the unexpected creation of two murals by Banksy and French street artist C215 (Christian Guémy) in Borodyanka, a town about 60 kilometers from Kyiv that suffered over 200 deaths and near-total destruction in the first two months of the war. Banksy painted 'La Ginnasta' (a girl vaulting over rubble) and 'Davide e Golia' (a child defeating a giant with judo) among bombed buildings. C215 contributed depictions of birds and portraits, including one of 27-year-old soldier Dmytro Kotsiubaylo, who died in battle. The documentary, directed by Michele Pinto from a subject by Didi Gnocchi and screenplay by Francesca Canto, features narration by Alessandro Sperduti. It also follows Italian restorers Paola Ciaccia, Alessandro Cini, and Maria Colonna, who traveled to Ukraine to preserve the street art amid minefields. Working with the municipality, they transported the murals by van and train for safekeeping. The artworks are intended for a future museum in Borodyanka, offering hope for peace.
