Documentary on Angelo Froglia, Modigliani hoax sculptor, to stream
A documentary titled 'Angelo Froglia. L'inganno dell'arte' (The Deception of Art), directed by Tommaso Magnano, will be available on demand from August. The film explores the life of Angelo Froglia (Livorno, 1955 – Rome, 1997), an irregular and controversial artist best known for creating the sculptures used in the 1984 Modigliani head hoax. Froglia, often dismissed as a dockworker with a painting hobby, a dilettante, a drug user, and a lost soul, produced a vast body of paintings throughout his short life. Painting was his obsession and his only means of communication with the world. He described it as 'the only constant in my life, along with the vice of causing messes as big as mountains.' His life was marked by art workshops, political struggles, maximum-security prisons, drugs, and great loves. He died HIV-positive in January 1997. The documentary aims to shed light on an unjustly underestimated artist and intellectual.
