Documentary on Álvaro Siza to premiere on Gallery streaming platform in June 2023

publication · 2026-04-27

A documentary titled 'SIZA' dedicated to Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza will be released in June 2023 on the streaming platform Gallery. Directed and produced by Augusto Custodio, who previously made 'Poeta das Linhas' about Paulo Mendes da Rocha, the film offers an intimate look at Siza's personal life, including his childhood, relationship with his wife, and passion for classical music. It features interviews with architects Eduardo Souto de Moura and Carlos Castanheira. One month earlier, Siza's installation 'O Encontro' will be presented at the Vatican Pavilion during the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale, directed by Lesley Lokko. The Vatican returns to the Biennale after its 2018 debut with ten chapels on San Giorgio Island. The national participation, titled 'Amicizia sociale: incontro in giardino,' is curated by Roberto Cremascoli, who co-curated the Portugal Pavilion in 2016. The project involves Siza and the Italian collective Studio Albori (Emanuele Almagioni, Giacomo Borella, Francesca Riva), who renovated the garden of the Benedictine abbey on San Giorgio Island, exceptionally accessible during the Biennale.
