Documentary on Alvar and Aino Aalto's Partnership Now Streaming

The documentary "Aalto," directed by Virpi Suutari from Finland, premiered in Italy at the 13th Lo schermo dell'arte festival and is now available for streaming. It explores the deep personal and professional relationship between architects Alvar and Aino Aalto, showcasing Aino's vital role in Artek, the design company founded in 1935 known for its modern interiors. Utilizing archival materials like radio interviews and footage from seven countries, the film traces their partnership, which concluded with Aino's death from cancer in 1949. Afterward, Alvar married architect Elissa Makiniemi, who is featured prominently in the latter part of the documentary. It also presents modern insights on notable Aalto buildings, including Paimio Sanatorium and the Church of Riola Vergato in Italy.
