Documentary on Achille Bonito Oliva to premiere at Rome Film Fest

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

A documentary titled "ABOrismi, Ritratti e Autoritratto" explores the life and work of art critic Achille Bonito Oliva, founder of the Transavanguardia movement. Directed by Nunzio Massimo Nifosì, who co-wrote the screenplay with Paola Marino, the film uses Bonito Oliva's famous aphorisms—dubbed "Aborismi"—to trace his character and perspective. It features portraits of the critic created by various artists and includes a cameo of his visit to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. The documentary will premiere on October 20 at the Museo MAXXI during the Festa del Cinema di Roma. This release coincides with a major retrospective at the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea del Castello di Rivoli, titled "A.B.O. Theatron. L’arte o la vita," curated by Andrea Viliani and running until November 6. The exhibition celebrates Bonito Oliva, now over eighty, as an artistic subject himself.
