Documentary 'L'incanto' Explores Pupi Avati and Milan's Cinema Odeon
A new documentary film titled 'L'incanto' by director Tomaso Pessina intertwines the personal and professional history of filmmaker Pupi Avati with the story of Milan's historic Cinema Odeon. The cinema, an Art Deco masterpiece inaugurated in 1929, was designed by architect Aldo Avati, the director's uncle and Pessina's great-grandfather. It closed in summer 2023 and is slated to become a luxury shopping center. The film uses this transformation as a narrative device to explore memory, belonging, and the magic of cinema through archival footage, film sequences, animations, and private conversations. Pessina, who founded production company Twin Studio in 2012 and previously directed 'Emilio Vedova. Dalla parte del naufragio', has collaborated with Avati on all his recent films. 'L'incanto' has been selected for the 22nd edition of the Giornate degli Autori in the Confronti section. The documentary aims to reveal the director behind the camera, focusing on Avati as an author and mentor.
