Documentary Follows Creation of Marble Sculpture for St. Peter's Basilica
The documentary "L’Ultima Nicchia" chronicles the three-and-a-half-year creation of a Carrara marble statue of Saint Annibale Maria Di Francia by sculptor Giuseppe Ducrot. The finished work was installed in an external niche of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, near the Arco delle Campane. Director Chiara Nano adapted her filming techniques to each stage of the process, from clay and plaster to resin and a single 60-ton marble block. The film premieres Monday, March 26 at 9:00 PM at Centro Aggregativo Apollo 11 in Rome, alongside Adrian Paci's "The Column," which follows a marble block quarried north of Beijing as it is carved by Chinese artisans during a cargo ship voyage. Introductions will be given by journalist and art historian Alessandra Mammì, film critic Roberto Silvestri, and director Chiara Nano.
