Documentary Explores Alain Daniélou's Life and Indian Music Legacy
The documentary "Alain Daniélou – Into the Labyrinth" (2016), directed by Riccardo Biadene, delves into the life of Alain Daniélou (1907–1994), a distinguished French scholar known for his expertise in Indian music, Hinduism, and Shivaism. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Daniélou spent fifteen years in the Rewa palace along the Ganges in Varanasi with his partner, Swiss photographer Raymond Burnier. He immersed himself in Sanskrit and classical Indian music, authoring works on Hindu philosophy and Vedic literature. After returning to Europe in 1961, he established the International Institute for Traditional Music (IITM) in Berlin, where he produced the inaugural UNESCO world music collection. The film features interviews, archival footage, and scenes from various Indian cities, examining the intersections of art, nature, religion, and cultural exchange. Daniélou, who felt alienated in Montmartre, ultimately found solace in India, later sharing its cultural richness in Italy. The documentary was showcased at the 13th Biografilm Festival in Bologna, as well as at the SummerMela Festival in Rome, the River Film Festival in Padua, and the Sole Luna Doc Film Festival in Palermo.
