Documentary 'Essere Giorgio Strehler' Celebrates Centenary of Legendary Theatre Director

A new documentary titled 'Essere Giorgio Strehler' directed by Simona Risi celebrates the centenary of the birth of Giorgio Strehler, a revolutionary figure in Italian and world theatre. The film is an intimate portrait constructed from previously unheard interviews with Strehler himself, interwoven with voices of others who discuss his work and art. The director's distinctive choice is to not show interviewees in a conventional manner but to place them in specific locations or accompany them with archival theatre materials. Strehler's own narrative voice provides a poetic and personal thread throughout, revealing the inspirations and emotions—such as his beloved Trieste, the sea, dawn and dusk colors—that led him to create landmark pages of theatre history. The documentary is written by Matteo Moneta and Gabriele Raimondi, produced by Didi Gnocchi for 3D Produzioni in collaboration with Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Sky Arte, the Municipality of Trieste, and the Museo Teatrale Carlo Schmidl of Trieste. It will air on Sky Arte (channels 400 and 120) on November 13 at 9:15 PM, available on demand and streaming on NOW, after being presented at the Rome Film Festival.
