Documentary 'El hombre que diseñó España' on Cruz Novillo arrives to Filmin

The documentary 'El hombre que diseñó España', directed by Andrea Gutiérrez Bermejo and Miguel Larraya, about artist and designer José María Cruz Novillo, will be released on Filmin on March 27. The film explores how Cruz Novillo's iconic logos—for PSOE, El Mundo, RENFE, Correos, ONCE, Antena 3, Policía Nacional, and even Spanish peseta banknotes—shaped Spain's visual identity during the Transition. The project began in 2015 after Gutiérrez Bermejo interviewed Cruz Novillo for his film posters, including 'El espíritu de la colmena'. The documentary won the CMM Award at Abycine festival in 2017, helping secure funding. It uses archival footage from private sources and U.S. State Department reports to contextualize Spain's aesthetic modernization. The film also highlights Cruz Novillo's artistic works, such as the dodecaphonic diaphragm 'Opus 14' (presented at ARCO 2010) and the INE building sculpture, described as 'the largest sculpture in the world'. The directors emphasize a deliberately optimistic view of the Transition, countering current critical revisionism.
