Documentary 'El amor y la muerte' explores Enrique Granados' life through music, art, and poetry
The documentary 'El amor y la muerte', directed by Arantxa Aguirre and produced by Rosa Torres Pardo with López-Li-Film and RTVE, premiered at Seminci (Valladolid International Film Festival) and has been successfully distributed in Spanish cinemas. It tells the story of Catalan composer and pianist Enrique Granados (1867–1916), known for 'Goyescas' and 'Spanish Dances'. After a successful debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and a recital for the US president, Granados and his wife died in 1916 when a German submarine attacked their ship in the English Channel. The film uses infographics, animations, and illustrations by Ana Juan, along with paintings by Rusiñol, Casas, Fortuny, and Miralles, and archival footage. The project originated in 2016, the centenary of Granados' death, inspired by the biography 'Enrique Granados: poeta del piano' by Walter Aaron Clark (University of Kansas City) and the complete correspondence edited by Miriam Perandones (Ed. Boileau). The documentary features contemporary musicians including pianist Rosa Torres Pardo, Evgeny Kissin, baritone Carlos Álvarez, soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrero, flamenco singers Arcángel and Rocío Márquez, guitarist Juan Manuel Cañizares, and dancer Patricia Guerrero. The title alludes to Goya's Capricho No. 10 and evokes the poetry of Federico García Lorca and Rainer Maria Rilke.
