Documentary 'Diventare Matteotti' Explores the Formative Years of Giacomo Matteotti

The documentary 'Diventare Matteotti', directed by Laura Fasolin, Camilla Ferrari, and Alberto Gambatori, investigates the youth and political formation of Giacomo Matteotti, the socialist politician assassinated in June 1924 by a fascist squad for denouncing Mussolini's illegal methods. The film focuses on Matteotti's origins in the Polesine region of Italy, where he was born in Fratta Polesine in 1885 to a socialist family. It traces his education—classical diploma followed by law studies at the University of Bologna—and his early political career, beginning with his first article as a teenager and his election as a city councilor at age 22. The documentary reconstructs his rise through recovered epistolary memories, biographical quotes, private notes, writings of friends and associates, and period journalistic contributions, covering locations from Fratta to Bologna to Messina. Presented on January 20, 2025, at the Province of Rovigo headquarters as part of the project 'Giacomo Matteotti, la vita e il sogno', the film is now screening in the UCCA circuit (Unione dei Circoli Cinematografici ARCI). The documentary argues that the values and principles of Matteotti's fellow countrymen contributed to his deep aversion to injustice and strong sense of social responsibility. Over a century after his death, Matteotti's memory remains a warning against fascist political regression.
