Documentary celebrates Prado's 200 years with Jeremy Irons

publication · 2026-04-27

A documentary titled 'Il Museo del Prado – La corte delle meraviglie' has been produced by Milan-based 3dProduzioni (Didi Gnocchi) in collaboration with Nexo Digital to celebrate the bicentennial of the Museo del Prado in Madrid. The film, directed by Valeria Parisi and co-written with Sabina Fedeli, features British actor Jeremy Irons as narrator. Irons praised the Italian perspective for highlighting what makes the Prado unique compared to the National Gallery or the Hermitage. The documentary was shot at night inside the museum and explores other historic sites including the Casón del Buen Retiro, the Real Fábrica de Tapices, the monasteries of Descalzas Reales and San Lorenzo dell'Escorial, and Yuste in Extremadura where Charles V retired. The film includes perspectives from Spanish cultural figures such as theatre director Helena Pimienta, photographer Pilar Pequeño, flamenco dancer Olga Pericet, Laura García Lorca (director of the García Lorca Foundation), and Marina Saura (daughter of painter Antonio Saura). The script emphasizes that only seven paintings in the Prado are by women. Irons contributed to the English script, which was dubbed into Italian by Mario Cordova. The documentary aims to make the museum accessible to those unable to travel to Madrid.
