Documentaries on Anna Paparatti and Clotilde Brewster Peploe at Rome Film Fest

At the Festa del Cinema di Roma, two documentaries directed by the artists' descendants explore the lives and creative legacies of Anna Paparatti and Clotilde Brewster Peploe. Fabiana Sargentini's "La Pitturessa" portrays her mother Anna Paparatti, an 87-year-old artist who was a key figure in Rome's avant-garde scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Paparatti, companion of gallerist Fabio Sargentini, was the subject of a 2021 exhibition and in 2022 curated sets for Dior shows at Maria Grazia Chiuri's invitation. The film is an intimate mother-daughter dialogue set amidst Paparatti's home filled with objects, caftans, scarves, jewelry, and Buddhist idols. Lola Peploe's debut "Grandmother's Footsteps" follows the footsteps of her grandmother Clotilde Brewster Peploe, an aesthetic nomad who found passion in Greece. While expecting her first child, Peploe questions how to align motherhood with being an artist. She travels to the Cyclades islands where Cloclo spent her last twenty years, searching for her old painting studio in Amorgos. The film weaves past and present through unexpected encounters, super8 footage shot by her father, and audio recordings of Cloclo. It features the voice of Charlotte Rampling and the last cinematic appearance of Bernardo Bertolucci, Peploe's grandfather.
