Documenta Fifteen Emphasizes Collective Exchange Over Individual Artworks in Kassel

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Documenta fifteen, curated by the Indonesian collective ruangrupa, opened on June 18 in Kassel, Germany, transforming the exhibition into a vast network of collaborative exchange. The concept of 'lumbung,' a communal rice barn, underpins the event, shifting focus from art objects to shared resources and solidarity among an estimated 1,500 participants across 72 collectives. The Fridericianum museum was converted into Fridskul, a school space hosting 11 collectives, including Gudskul from Jakarta. Brazilian artist Graziela Kunsch's 'Public Daycare' project, inspired by pediatrician Emmi Pikler, offers free childcare and features archival photographs by Marian Reismann. The exhibition faced controversy over alleged antisemitic imagery in a work by Taring Padi, which was subsequently removed, prompting formal apologies. Other notable participants include the Fondation Festival sur le Niger from Mali, showcasing Abdoulaye Konaté; Indian artist Amol K Patil; non-binary cartoonist Nino Bulling; Spanish collective INLAND, collaborating with Hito Steyerl; and Tania Bruguera's INSTAR. The show occupies 39 venues, including repurposed factories like Hübner Areal and Hafenstrasse 76, and will run for 100 days, with many artists residing on-site.
