Documenta Fifteen Embraces Collective Activism with Indonesian Group ruangrupa at Helm

exhibition · 2026-04-23

For the first time, Documenta, the contemporary art exhibition held in Kassel, Germany, is centering its attention on activist collectives, with Jakarta-based ruangrupa at the helm. This change comes after the 2017 edition, which was curated by Adam Szymczyk. Ruangrupa, which took part in the 31st Bienal de São Paulo in 2014, traveled to São Paulo in March for discussions with groups such as JAMAC and indigenous leader Jerá Guarani. The exhibition will feature fourteen collectives from thirteen countries, including INLAND, established by Fernando García-Dory in 2009, and the UK-based neurodiverse collective Project Art Works, nominated for the 2021 Turner Prize. Cuban artist Tania Bruguera will also showcase her collective INSTAR. Ruangrupa will present the Indonesian concept of 'lumbung' to promote resource sharing. The event is set to take place in Kassel.
