The anti-Semitism controversy at documenta fifteen in Kassel, which ended in September, connects to broader cultural wars described by sociologist James Davison Hunter in 1991. These conflicts involve conservative groups targeting art they deem subversive, as seen in past incidents like the 1989 Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition censorship in Washington and the 2017 Queermuseu cancellation in Porto Alegre.
