Documenta at 50: A Historical Survey in Kassel

exhibition · 2026-04-23

To mark the 50th anniversary of Documenta, the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel staged an exhibition from September 1 to November 20, 2005, curated by René Block and Michael Glasmeier. The show was split into two sections: 'Archive in Motion,' a documentary part tracing the eleven editions, and 'Discreet Energies,' a selection of works from past Documentas. The documentary section was criticized as austere and monotonous, with small images and few relics. In contrast, 'Discreet Energies' avoided a simple 'best-of' approach, mixing works from different editions without a clear narrative. Highlights included William Engelen's musical piece built around reactions to Walter de Maria's 'Vertikale Erdkilometer' (Documenta 6, 1977), Kai Vöckler's digital removal of sculptures from Documenta 2 photographs, and Guillaume Bijl's wax museum featuring Joseph Beuys, Jan Hoet, and the Bodes (Documenta 9, 1992). A notable anecdote involved Gerhard Richter's unfinished 1964 portrait of Documenta founder Arnold Bode, painted on advice from gallerist Heiner Friedrich to secure an invitation; Richter was not included until 1972. The exhibition also featured works by Ulrike Grossarth, Hans Haacke, and others. The 'Discreet Energies' section did not travel.
